The Backlash has Infrastructure!
Anti-gender narratives don’t circulate; they are manufactured and distributed through coordinated digital infrastructure.
Our research with RNW Media found that Telegram functions as the primary coordination hub, accounting for 44% of the 27,022 posts analysed. Content is assembled there; long-form posts, religious audio, memes, sermon PDFs, then redistributed across platforms in near-identical forms within hours.
73% of visual media that appeared on X during peak moments had originated on Telegram 6–18 hours earlier. Focus group participants described encountering the same materials across WhatsApp, X, and TikTok. Confirming what the data shows: this is coordinated, not spontaneous.
Understanding the infrastructure of backlash is essential for building responses that can withstand it.
