Meza Yetu Collective is a Nairobi-based feminist collective of storytellers, organisers, and researchers working alongside feminist movements and communities to document lived experience, build narratives, and bring feminist knowledge into public and policy conversations.
Our work began in 2020 with Unmothering the Woman, a storytelling initiative documenting experiences that challenge dominant and patriarchal views on motherhood, reproductive justice, and the social roles assigned to women and gender-diverse people.
Through that work, it became clear that the stories societies repeat about gender shape how authority, legitimacy, and participation are understood.
Today, the collective documents and interprets lived experience to examine how gendered power operates in everyday life.
This work moves across storytelling, participatory inquiry, feminist archiving, and digital documentation. We treat lived experience as knowledge and document how people encounter institutions, social norms, and systems that shape their lives. Our work brings together narrative practice, evidence building, and public engagement.

Our work is collective by design. Meaning, power, and change are
produced through relationships. We believe difference strengthens our thinking, and trust
allows us to work with depth, care, and accountability. We intentionally create space for
diverse perspectives across roles, disciplines, and lived experiences, ensuring that voices
closest to the work and most affected by inequality are heard and valued.
Meza Yetu Collective exists to act. We prioritise what
matters, commit to moving it forward, and remain willing to adapt as conditions shift. Acting
with courage, judgment, and accountability, we turn feminist ideas into collective action.
Our work unfolds in complexity. We reflect as we go, refine what we
are building, and embrace iteration as part of progress. For us, learning happens through
practice, experimentation, and reflection. We value curiosity over certainty and transparency
over polish, understanding that growth requires the courage to adapt and evolve.
Care, recognition, and shared growth are central to how we
work. We take responsibility for one another’s development and well-being, recognising that
collective strength is built through support, trust, and generosity. We share knowledge
openly, celebrate effort and contribution, and create a culture where people are seen,
valued, and able to grow together.
Our work carries weight. We make decisions
informed by evidence, lived experience, and context, recognising the responsibility that
comes with shaping narratives. We take accountability for our choices and their
consequences, owning outcomes, including mistakes, and following through on our
commitments.
We are open about how resources are
received, allocated, and used. Stewardship of funds is part of our responsibility to
partners, collaborators, and the communities connected to our work.

Aminah J. — Co-Director
Aminah is a Storyteller and co-director at Meza Yetu Collective. She works at the intersection of narrative, data, and power, asking inconvenient questions about who gets heard, who gets counted, and who gets erased. She believes feminism requires rigour and imagination in equal measure.
She is interested in alternative funding, sound, film, mothering, the mechanics of systems that influence women's lives, and in building spaces where evidence and stories form part of collective care. At Meza Yetu, she is committed to joyful resistance and the long, messy work of remaking the world together.
