Meza Yetu – 2021

In promoting the right to equity, and equality in all spaces, we fought to have seats at the table. But to truly own our voice, to truly be seen, we must take up space, and create our own table. We are Meza Yetu.

The online space is yet another avenue through which women and girls have become a target for violence. Harsh, threatening, bullying, violent, abusive and harassing messages, rape photos and videos, public shaming, doxing, non-consensual sharing of photos and videos – these are but some of the weapons used by perpetrators of violence – hiding behind their screens.

The effects of cyber violence on women and girls are as chilling as they are wide and far-reaching. Just because it’s virtual, it doesn’t make it any less real.

You are not alone.

We see you.

We have been you.

And we hope that as we speak about this, others will see us too – and we can do right by each other.
